1. How old were you when you knew your life was going to be art? Started on the ukulele at age 11 and went on for a summer of guitar lessons before volunteering to play bass in our first band at age 13.
2. When did you start for real? Moved on to play the piano and alto sax and started doing gigs around the Big Island of Hawaii and it was about that time that I felt like I wanted to do this forever.
3. Were you single minded in this pursuit or did you train/educate for a "real" job? Always had another job and still do which is book restoration.
4. School - Did it help, hinder, or immaterial? A year and a half of college majoring in music did help in loving all kinds of music.
7. What gigs stand out to you, looking back? Recording with Bob Dylan in New Orleans was like a dream as well as having Bruce Springsteen sitting with the Joe Ely Band in Ireland. And it was a pleasure to work with Robert Plant who is most humble.
8. Who did you like performing with? I enjoy playing with each and everyone.
13. How do you want to be remembered? Remembered as a solid bass player and friendly to everyone.
15. Is it as easy as it looks? Being a musician takes constant learning.
16. Is it fun? It's so important to have fun playing music. If that goes away then you might as well find something else to do.
18. What would you say to wannabee performers? My advice to young musicians is to balance the music with something else. It helps to keep the passion in your music.
